CE NYC: Internship visit and Day One
Almost caught up from our long and exhausting weekend. Its Monday. We woke up at 7AM with apprehension, then breathed a sigh of relief that it was July 5th and a national holiday. No work! But there was plenty of work to be done. We scrambled downstairs to meet a Group Advisor (GA) who would take us to our internship site. Dispersing across the city, we explored the many alternate routes for our Tuesday first day. It was another scorcher! Some of us were a mere walk away while others had exciting internships across Manhattan and up to Queens!
We were also led in an internship workshop back at the New School in preparation for our first day and the start of a new chapter in our professional careers. Though faced with fantastic opportunities for connections, growth and exploration, we also learned to moderate our expectations, especially during the first week. Only time will tell what this summer will bring for us!
We had free time before dinner. This dinner was something special as we trekked over to Times Square for John's Pizzeria for a group dinner. What a banquet they had set up for us upstairs. Some groups even got time to experience the famous Toys 'R Us in Times Square, including the 60 foot tall Ferris Wheel. We ate together, toasted with new friends and gathered back to the dorms for our first weeknight curfew.
Day One. Leaving early for work was no problem. A croissant and an apple on the way. A firm handshake with our mentor and boss for the summer. And off to work we go! Hi ho! An afternoon trip to Starbucks and the local deli for lunch. A quick check of e-mail and back to work. Everything from fashion design to photography to medical research to event planning. We did it all and jumped in with two feet. Tonight was a GA Group Night too. Some of us took off to Bloomingdales (and Dillon's Candy Bar) while others took the air-conditioned 3D Toy Story 3 option instead. Whatever it was, we bonded with our group, laughed and enjoyed the New York City cooler night together. But again, another work night; we tucked into bed early. All caught up with our exciting first weekend. Next blog will include a student intern's experience and thoughts after her first week! Stay tuned and stay cool. Be sure to follow us on Twitter.
