CE Chicago: Farewell Event

Last night was CE Chicago's farewell event was a spectacular show of colors. The theme of the party was the color party in which interns and staff alike dressed in one solid color of their choice, the result being some amazing outfits and a whole lot of yellow. (But yellow is a great color so who could blame them?).

The party started when Katie's group walked in, and we made our way to O'Brien's Restaurant for a fantastic dinner. Afterward we went to O'Brien's roof! No not the restaurants, but our very own Lauren O'Brien's roof, which was decked out with colorful flowing banners, Christmas lights and sparklers. The mood being set, the interns dug into some brightly decorated strawberries and muffins that matched their outfits!



All the while bubbles drifted by the interns leading them to the game of bags being dominated by Alec and Mimi and floating by the magician. I'm still not sure how Suellen ended up with a different card in her hand, but needless to say the magician was magical. Some interns even had caricatures sketched of them with the skyline in the background and still others just relaxed, talked, played crainium and twister.


After enjoying a perfect night out on the roof the group made it's way back to the dorms. Where they were able to get into their comfiest sweatpants and come down to the multimedia room where the interns were presented with their superlatives awards by their mentors. Then in an unexpected, but highly appreciated twist, the interns presented the mentors with poems, songs, and artwork they created themselves as a thank you. The scene was moving, and I can think of no mentor that wasn't deeply touched by the thought each of their groups put into their goodbyes!
Finally the interns watched a slideshow (which they all received to take home) with the perfect amount of corniness and heart touching moments of aww's and laughter. The highlight of course being the Alec-David portion! With all said and done the interns spent their time saying goodbyes and hanging out. And then this morning they all gathered in the lobby to wish each departing group goodbye with tears in eyes and hugs all around as they left for the airport.

This was the perfect way to end the month and say goodbye, and now regrettably our adventure comes to an end. We are so proud of all of our interns and the amazing jobs they have done! They have made this an incredible and fun experience and we wish them the best of luck in the future and know they are now a little more prepared for what life can throw at them! Good luck Interns and thanks for a great Summer 2010!

Journal Entry Excerpt from Patrick Sheehan, Political Intern:

Politicians in the United States are looked upon for leadership in moments of distress. Politicians are elected, by the citizens, to represent the people’s best interest. To say that politicians affect the lives of citizens is an understatement; politicians can directly control the well being of the people it represents. That is why my internship with Alexi Giannoulias’ campaign is more than just a summer job; my work can change the path the United States takes.

My work consists of researching information on potential voters and calling the great citizens of Illinois to try and gauge which way they’re leaning in this upcoming election. Even though I am far from leading the Free World, all my work is directly sent to Alexi. If I make a mistake, that is one less potential donor or voter. If I succeed in persuading somebody that Alexi is the right choice for senator, or if my work leads to a donation, I know that I had an impact on the biggest senatorial race in the country.

It is still hard to believe that I am behind the scenes of a very important political race. If Alexi wins, the lives of Americans will change for the better and I will know confidently I had a part in that!

Journal Entry Excerpt from Ben Kogan, Architecture Intern:

I only truly began to understand my mentor Jim when I asked him why he became interested in architecture. Jim started at the beginning, explaining the roots of his interest—a modeling and woodworking class that he took in high school. Then, he described how that led to his time studying architecture at a University in Chicago.

But, it wasn't his words that told the story; it was his hands. He began explaining the countless late-night models he had built. His hands worked the air furiously, forming invisible walls, mullioned windows, and sloping roofs.

His eyes drifted away from mine and instead searched through the three-dimensional renderings on the office walls. His fingers explored the halls of the building sketches that rested along the paper.

My mentor's explanation showed me that architecture is about taking ideas and making them into something real, tangible, and complete.

Journal Entry Excerpt from Christopher Chyung, Hotel Management Intern:

“Hi, nice to meet you,” said my mentor. “Welcome. I need you to get up to speed on New York City hotels. Research things like occupancy, retail, $PSF, RevPAR, ADR, F&B, pro formas, things like that, you know? You can start by reading Starwood’s and Mandarin Oriental’s Annual Reports. Then we’ll get started on the Aman property. I need to run to a meeting, be back soon.”
It was my first day on the job, and I had lost count of the many unfamiliar terms to research before my mentor had even finished her request. Once she left, I stared blankly at my computer screen, wondering what exactly to type into the Google search bar. Did she say “FNB,” “FMB,” or “F&B”? Of the thousands of hotels in the city, how many do I have to research before I’m “done”? Suddenly, I craved structure, like a day at school, or familiar comforts, like home. I realized though that this was the “real world” and I better get to work.

I wanted to learn about the hotel industry this summer, so I buckled down, searched for the annual reports, and found everything she was talking about all in one place! Now to figure out the printer…

Needless to say, I’ve been learning a lot in my internship. I am happy that Career Explorations didn’t hold my hand through the process of getting acquainted with my company. Thanks to this amazing summer experience, I have really come to love the “real world” so far.

Journal Entry Excerpt from Amanda Satsky, Music Intern:

“Go to the store on 5th Avenue. Take your time, and look around while you are there. See who is purchasing what, and what seems to be most popular and buy it,” my mentor said. “I’ll see you later. If you have any problems, please call me.” This was a task I handled for my mentor at Chesky Records this morning, and although it may seem small, I found this task very significant.

Here I was working at one of the best record labels in New York City and my mentor, whom I have only worked with for fourteen days, trusted me with her credit cards. This woman barely knew me. I felt important, like my presence and a member of the staff was appreciated and valued.

The employee at the store who rang up my purchase asked me for ID. I showed him the Chesky Records business card, and he asked if I was Lisa’s “personal assistant.” I liked the sound of that. On my journey back to the office, I daydreamed about one day becoming, ‘Amanda Satsky- Chesky Record’s Producer’s Personal Assistant’ The title had a nice ring to it. Maybe someday, thanks to my internship this summer, it can become a reality.

CE Chicago: Lincoln Park

Warm sunshine, perfectly ripe fruit, fresh herbs, gorgeous flowers, farm fresh cheeses and meats, and… African Apes? Our Saturday at the Lincoln Park farmers market and zoo was simply lovely. The skies couldn’t have been bluer and the bountiful farmer stands were bursting with beautiful peaches and blackberries. Interns and CE staff tried thick organic smoothies and breakfast sandwiches made with ingredients grown and produced not too far from the city. Following our tour of the Midwest’s finest farms, we were welcomed to the Lincoln Park Zoo by an impressive collection of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. The primates, particularly the African Apes, stole the show, but it was exhilarating to see the jaguar at such a close distance. Thankfully no interns were made into lunch by any of the predators and everyone seemed to have an very enjoyable and relaxing day in Lincoln Park.

CE Chicago: Shrek The Musical

Today the interns went out to experience Chicago's Broadway when they saw "Shrek the Musical" at the Cadillac Theater. Obviously we can’t get any photos of the musical itself, but enjoy this photo of the lovely marquee. The musical was fantastic, while playing true to the movie it still had countless songs and twists to give it a new feel that left the audience clutching their sides with laughter. The most prominent performer had to be the three, yes you heard me right, three Fiona’s. That is child Fiona, teen Fiona, and adult Fiona. Who, when joining together for a song, blew the roof off and stunned the audience. The musical was a smash hit, but I think watching everyone try to run for the train in the pouring rain helped make the night perfect. No better excuse for everyone to get their favorite blanket and watch a movie in our media room as the night winds down.

CE NYC: Fashion Reporting

New York City is known for its big lights, huge crowds, and never ending opportunities. This summer I was able to experience New York for the first time through Career Explorations. My internship this summer was fashion, and I was able to work for New York Fashion Connect. NYFC has allowed me to write numerous articles for them in their blog, which is great because I am planning to work towards a career in fashion journalism. I am even attending a fashion show my last week here, and writing an article to my mentors. My internship through CE has not only been a great experience but also one I will never forget. Being here at Career Explorations has prepared me for the college world and gives me the confidence to know that I can make it. To me personally that is a great feeling and makes me feel like I can be successful.

Journal Entry Excerpt from Morgan Conners, Medical Intern:

Before my internship experience at Boston Medical Center, I was not familiar with the medical field. Although I have volunteered at my local hospital for the past two years I have never had an experience that allowed me to observe medical professionals interacting with patients and performing surgeries. The procedures that I witnessed have inspired me to work my hardest at becoming a doctor.

The first surgery I observed was a splenectomy. A 13 year old girl had a parasitic tumor on her spleen that required the whole organ to be removed. I had stood less than five feet away from the operating table when they made the first incision. Although the average person might faint at the sight of exposed blood and the organs that are typically hidden behind layers of skin I couldn’t help but be excited by the events unfolding in front of me. It wasn’t until the spleen had been completely removed that I realized I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else in the future.

Now when I get asked what my plans are from the future I can be confident in my response. I can say that in two years I will be graduating high school, in six I will be graduating college, in 10 I will be graduating medical school, and then in 15 years I will have completed my residency and will be moving onto my fellowship. Although this is a very basic outline for the next 15 years of my life I am pleased by the confidence that comes with it. I know that I will be a doctor during my lifetime and I know that I will be performing surgery in whatever specialty I have. I am very grateful for the internship that I have been giving as it has allowed me to find my ideal profession.

Journal Entry Excerpt from Chris Nugent, Finance Intern:
This summer I set out to explore the financial industry through an internship. However, I gained much more than just experience in the financial field, I got a sense of what building a company is like, and I saw how something begins as just a new and innovative ideas can be developed into a successful companies.

My summer internship was with a broker from PAM (Progressive Asset Management), a subsidiary of FinancialWest Group. PAM is a firm that specializes in socially responsible investing so they screen all stocks, bonds, and mutual funds they buy on behalf of clients to ensure those securities support companies that reflect good social values. My mentor has carefully built his business through innovative marketing and superb client relations, capitalized on the green movement by marketing PAM at various green investing conferences and other environmentally related events. By assisting in the planning of these events, I saw first hand all the groundwork that goes into developing a client base, the most crucial part of a financial firm.

In addition to that, I was responsible for researching companies that were considered for investment by the firm. In this research I learned a great deal about the new innovative companies that are popping up to solve issues in society. I learned to spot companies with promising business models and values that aligned with our customers. and I developed a sense of what it takes to identify investment-worthy small companies.

As a high school student I did not know what to expect of my internship experience. Fortunately, I was able to learn the value of marketing and client relations while at the same time gaining valuable experience in researching companies and buying stocks and securities. Through this internship I have grown; I have developed a better sense of the business world, which will be invaluable later on in life and in my career.

Journal Entry Excerpt from Marissa Cohen, Political Intern:

This summer I was lucky enough to experience politics in full swing. I worked on a campaign for Board of Supervisors, doing what my mentor referred to as “the heart of the entire campaign.” Experiencing the inner workings of a campaign showed me what it takes to live my dream: have a political position. Having that dream come true gave me an idea of what a political position, and running for one, really entails, as well as effective techniques for thriving in a professional environment.

Working on a campaign taught me more than just ways to get elected. It taught me how to get people to help me with tasks, and how to find the first steps in achieving one bigger and greater goal. These are lessons I’ll be able to keep with me even after this program is over.

When the internship is over and I go home, I’ll be able to keep these lessons with me and apply them to my everyday life. If school presents me with a huge project, I’ll know how to break it down into easily manageable parts. This internship taught me that politics really is something I want to pursue in the future, how to pursue it, and how to apply it to my everyday life.

Journal Entry Excerpt from Mackenzie Roach, Veterinary Medicine Intern:

I am interning at Presidio Way Veterinary Hospital and I love it. I'm learning so much about animal medicine, people skills, and general work habits that I will definitely use in the future. Sometimes, I work at the front dealing with clients, filing and organizing papers, and gaining basic receptionist skills important for any job. Although those tasks may not seem the most exciting, I really enjoyed learning how to run and maintain the hospital. I know these skills will become extremely useful in my future regardless of the career I pursue.

While learning the basics of front desk management was extremely important and beneficial, the most thrilling and eye-opening part of my internship is working in the back with the animals. I shadowed the head nurse as she trained and introduced me to all the daily tasks, procedures, and skills required to treat and care for the dogs and cats that come into the hospital. I've learned how to draw up necessary medications and drugs in syringes and needles. I help the nurses and technicians restrain and soothe the animals. I have learned how to clean the animal’s ears, cut their nails, and test their blood. Unfortunately, sometimes my job can get messy; however, knowing how to complete these tasks is an important part of the veterinary field. I even know how to prepare fecal samples and read them under a microscope. Although my job isn’t always glamorous at times, I really love going to work everyday.

My favorite aspect of my workplace is that every day something new and exciting happens. For example, I got to stand in my first surgery the other day. The doctor had to remove a dog's eye because I believe it had glaucoma and the eye was very painful. And my most exciting moment was when I got to watch a surgery on a bulldog. This experience meant the most to me because I used to have bulldogs and the bulldog in surgery needed to remove a cancerous mass on its head. I watched as the doctor remove a large portion of the dog’s skin on its head and I could see the dog’s skull. For me, that moment was one of the most exhilarating and surreal experiences. I am certain that I will always remember my experience this summer. It has been a great benefit for my future.

CE Chicago: Museum Day

Last Sunday our groups split up and explored the museum of their choice. Be it the Art Institute where they saw priceless works of art throughout the ages and felt the inspiration and beauty of humanity.The Field Museum, where they came face to face with Sue the T-Rex and countless other exhibits on the evolution of nature and our planet.Or the Museum of Science and Industry, where they made their own tornadoes, learned about the building blocks of life, experienced themselves as an exhibit in the YOU! Experience. An exhibit to help them make the right choices in and breaking down what they are made of. The interns played in the submarine (with working periscopes poking out of the roof), and experienced entire cities shrunk down to fit in a room.The experiences were amazing and awe inspiring at all of the museums, and all were met with excited inters ready to explore the beauties and mysteries of the world.

CE San Francisco Mentor Night

Last night we invited all our Mentors to join us for a night of networking and light refreshments on campus. We celebrated the time spent with our Mentors and thanked them for all their hard work. It was a great night to network and get to know the day to day tasks of our interns. We learned that Rob at SMC Recordings has helped with the day to day tasks within the office, including organizing cds for the office. All of the political interns (Charles, Jeff, Basil, Marissa, Winston) were much appreciated within their specific districts. Marissa's co-worker told us that she has been doing whatever is asked and is an asset to their team. Basil's candidate for supervisor, Malia Cohen, was able to stop by and noted that Basil has the great ability to work the room! Our intern at the Deli Board (Olivia), has spent some time doing delivery as well as making food for catering. A Good Idea non-profit interns (Janelle and Katie) have created their own event and handed out water bottles to the homeless. The Westin St. Francis interns (Ben and Sam) were able to gain experience within the finance department and work the front desk, while enjoying the view from some of the high class hotel rooms! Our interns BayCat (Alexis and Christie) helped created films and even taught some acting classes! Irene, our architecture intern, spent her time going to client meetings as well as doing administrative work and had the opportunity to draw some designs on AUTOCAD. Presidio Way Veterinary Hospital is sad to see Mackenzie leave after being a vital part of their work place, either being the receptionist or helping restrain dogs during cleanings. The Philharmonic has offered our intern Courtney the chance to see the Symphony after all her hard work behind the scenes. We even have two interns who worked in the psychology department at San Francisco State (Allison and Gus) who are going to be published! All of us in San Francisco are very excited for their accomplishments and can't believe they'll be leaving in two days.

CE San Francisco's Last Weekend

It's hard to believe that we just spent our last full weekend together, but boy did we go out with a bang! On Friday, we went to root on the Giants at AT&T park. It was a close game ending with the home team winning 1-0. After the game there were fireworks that were much better than our 4th of July experience (there was too much fog then)!

Saturday some of us headed to Muir Woods to relax and unwind with the peacefullness of the trees, while the rest of us traveled to Chinatown (the largest Chinatown outside of China!). Here we are at the gate.And of course eating some Chinese food!

This was all followed by a good laugh at Young Frankenstein on Saturday night. The main character was even on Desperate Housewives!

Sunday morning we headed out early to beat this fog and see some sun at the warm beaches in Santa Cruz. Everyone enjoyed themselves whether they went kayaking, relaxed on the sand, took a dip in the ocean, or rode the rides on the Boardwalk. What a great weekend!

Chicago: Cirque Shanghai

This Friday, our group went to see Cirque Shanghai; Chicago’s Asian twist on the ever popular Cirque de Soleil. This was no mere circus act. The jugglers tossed just about anything in perfect unison and timing. A bike, we found out, could fit over 10 people on it, and the human neck can hold much more weight than we ever thought possible! The acrobats glided through the air and balanced on EACH OTHER! CE’s own Alec got to go on stage, though he did not participate with the pocket bikes in the circle cage, he definitely captured the audience with his antics in attempting to mimic our ringleaders juggling skills. Overall an amazing show that left everyone wanting to do back flips as they filed out.

CE Chicago: Giving Back

This weekend the Career Explorations team hit the streets in an effort to give back to the community! The groups went off with their GA's to various neighborhoods to help spread the word about Coprodeli. A nonprofit group set up to help Peru in almost every aspect, from micro loans, to education and building homes. This was a truly great cause for the Interns to rally behind. And in the grueling 90+ degree heat they passed out and hung up fliers, talked with complete strangers, and boosted the awareness for this great organization. After coming back for some refreshments and cooling down, we took them to a well deserved treat at the Comedy Sportz Theater for some Improv! We even got three of our very own Interns up there (Minhal, Ben and Alec)! After a day full of good deeds, and a night full of laughs we headed back home to rest up for all the activities we had to be ready for on Sunday!

CE NYC: Notes and Thoughts from FIT girls

Hi, my name is Leah Simon and I am an upcoming sophomore. I have always loved the fashion world and was never sure how I could expose my self first-hand, then I found Career Explorations. I have been able to explore so much of New York City that I have never seen before: I touched the Fashion Walk of Fame and visited the notorious Mood fabric store (as seen on Project Runway). Currently, I am moving onto my second week of classes at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). In the morning I am sketching and designing, and by the afternoon I am studying trends in the global fashion markets. I am so glad that I took the step to explore what I love, and thank you CE for helping me!

Hi, my name is Lauren Stein and I am a rising sophomore. I've always been into fashion, but this summer I have decided to kick it up a notch and enroll in courses at FIT. During my first week of life in the city, I was overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the sidewalk traffic and the ways of "the city that never sleeps." By the second week of classes, I am less overwhelmed and beginning to appreciate all that I am experiencing this summer!

Hi, my name is Courtney Clay and I am also a rising sophomore. My love for fashion isn't based on what I wear or how I look. My love for fashion is based on what inspires me and how it develops into art. Being at Career Explorations and taking classes at FIT has inspired me to learn and improve my talent. At FIT I am studying Fashion Art for Fashion Designers which is more about the realism of fashion and Fashion Anatomy which is the creative side of fashion by expressing your creative and playful sides. Since the time I started (I just completed my first week), I've learned so much and am so grateful to learn more about fashion and myself aspiring to be part of the industry. I'm looking forward to being part of the bigger picture.

Hi, my name is Bianca Williams. I am 14 years old and going into my sophomore year. This summer, I decided to take my love for art and come to this camp to improve myself. Taking class at FIT is something I never thought I would be able to do. I love art and fashion, so being able to do those things at FIT is an incredible opportunity for me. However, moving to NYC for a whole month has been a little difficult for me because of homesickness and adjusting to life with roommates and a curfew. Despite having to wake up before noon, I am enjoying my time here and I know this is something I want to spend my life doing.

CE Chicago: Goes Greek!

On Monday night, our group went to a Greek restaurant called Santorini in Chicago's Greektown. Santorini is really well known for their authentic Greek seafood dishes. The inside was decorated beautifully, with hanging baskets, very cool chandeliers and soft white stucco walls. We started off our meal with 'saganaki', which is flaming cheese. They literally brought the cheese to our table and set it on fire! After we enjoyed the cheese with bread, we each got something different to eat. Sara got a kind of Greek salad with anchovies (yuck!), Melissa got chicken kebabs with rice, and Minhal got lamb wrapped in fillo dough with vegetables and Greek cheese, to name a few. All in all, we had a great time enjoying each others company and the delicious Greek food!

Arnold Arboretum: The Arnold Arboretum is 265 acres of beautiful landscape that serves the dual purpose of research space and a public landscape. It is the oldest public arboretum in North America and is home a wide variety of different plants and trees. Even though it is located in Boston, it feels like you are traveling a world away from the city.

Boston Freedom Trail: Walk the Freedom Trail around Boston that takes you to historic sites such as the Paul Revere house, the statue of Benjamin Franklin, the site of the Boston Massacre, along with many others. It is amazing how much history is involved in such a small land area, the entire tour is a 2 ½ mile walk.

CE Boston: Meet Last Night's Career Night Panelists!

Career Night Panelists discussed their paths to success and their undergraduate & graduate university experiences, offered up tips on choosing college and career paths, and held a question & answer period.

After the panel, many Interns seized the opportunity to converse one-on-one with panelists.

Here are short profiles of the young professionals
who were good enough to join us at C.E. Boston last night:

Andrew Sacher

Andrew earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and his law degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City. He is currently general counsel for BBK Worldwide Patient Recruitment. Prior to joining BBK Worldwide, Andrew spent six years as an assistant district attorney in the Bronx County District Attorney's Office in New York. Before that, he was an associate with a large international law firm focusing on labor and employment litigation.

June Park

June earned her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley and her master’s from Cornell University. She currently works as a fund manager for Boston Financial Investment Management focusing on affordable real estate. Prior to moving to Boston June traveled the world, spending time in Europe, Tanzania, India, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Kristin Faulder

Ms. Faulder has a background in both Communications and Public Relations. She has worked as an Anchor and as a Reporter in the state of Tennessee. She currently works for Schneider Associates.

Paolo Piselli

Paolo is a software engineer who has worked at an internet start-up, a video game company, a media company, and a defense contractor. He completed his undergraduate degree in Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and his master's degree in Computer Science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

CE Chicago: World Cup

Last Sunday, CE Chicago went to watch the World Cup at Soldier Field. We walked around and saw the different promotional booths offering anything from Powerade to hacky sacks. Some of us even kicked around a soccer ball with one of the local teams. They also had chances for fans to hone their soccer skills and see if they were the next Pele. As we were watching the game on the 2 jumbo screens, local youth soccer teams were dazzling the soccer fans. In addition, vuvuzelas filled the crisp Chicago afternoon air and eardrums were pounded with the official noise of the World Cup. Fans were all decked out in Spanish and Netherlands apparel to show how passionate they were about their team. When Spain finally scored in overtime, the electricity of the crowd was enough to light up the whole city of Chicago.

CE Boston: Internship snapshots

Here are a few snapshots of what just a few of Boston's Interns
have been involved in so far this summer:

Jack and Brad are leading a sandwich competition of Boston restaurants featuring Pangea’s new product - a toaster that imprints a sports logo in the bread.

Patton has been researching a bike share program for Boston at the City Hall and is responsible for writing the agenda for the hearing. This week he also is heading to one of the Harbor Islands with his mentor to look at any potential environmental concerns.

Morgan C. has observed multiple surgeries Boston Medical Center.

Dana and Francesca at BNN-TV have directed entire shows & worked the switchboards, audio boards, and cameras!

Audrey, Marie, Gabby, and Ari completed a coding manual on the topic of reconciliation as part of a larger psychology project focusing on war and peace at Boston University. They will be presenting the manual to faculty members at a board meeting.

Alexis and Cory are looking forward to the opportunity to interview US Senator Scott Brown at an upcoming event and have already interviewed Bottomline employees about issues concerning college dropouts and produced short segments educating youth about voting laws. They work at Press Pass TV.

Emily has been an integral part of the close-knit staff at Post 390 restaurant. She has aided in ensuring the restaurant runs smoothly; dinner prep before the big rush, cake decoration, helping the hostess, and making trips to the market with her mentor to procure the proper ingredients for a gourmet restaurant.

Grace, Niki and Julia are working to organize the Memory Ride by contacting volunteers, putting kits together and doing general event preparation. Grace was responsible for managing volunteers!

CE NYC: All the News That's Fit To Print

Even with all of the other experiences outside of my internship, I have to say that my actual work experience has been the highlight of my first week at CE. I'm interning at the Queens Courier newspaper in Queens, NY. Before my first day, I have to admit that I had some skepticism about my upcoming internship. I had an hour-long commute (including a subway, a transfer at Penn Station, taking an actual, above ground train, and walking three blocks), I found very few restaurants in the area that caught my eye for lunch, and after going through the test run of my commute, what I could see of my job site, a small door leading to a narrow staircase to my office, was not very impressive.

However, on my first day I realized that I had an awesome internship. My mentor, Pete Davis, was very kind and helpful right from the start. Also, the publishers and editors of the paper were very welcoming as well. That day was a busy one, since they had been closed the day before for the 4th of July holiday, and they had approaching deadlines to meet. Everyone got to work straight away, including myself. That day and a few before had been some of the hottest in the history of Queens, and a writer on the staff was working on a story about the heat wave. They asked me to go out into the area and interview a few residents, store owners, construction workers, whoever, and get some quotes about the heat wave. The next day the paper was printed and since I got the quotes, I was listed as a co-writer on the byline of the cover story (on my first day!).

Later on in the week I worked on many other assignments. I conducted some interviews and wrote an article about two adult students at the Queens Community College who earned a Scholarship award, which will be printed in this week's paper. I also interviewed a man about his community service for the weekly 'Star of Queens' feature, which will appear in next week's paper. I wrote two sports blog posts for AspireNY.com, an online version of one of their sister publications, Aspire, which is a magazine for college students in the area. On Friday, they sent me out on an assignment to cover two stories. The Queens Center mall was adding on some new retailers, so I was writing a story about that, but one of them was a Lego store. On Friday for their grand opening they were having kids help their 'Master Model Builder' (yes, this is a real job) build an 8-foot R2-D2 model. I was sent to the mall Friday morning to interview some Lego and mall representatives, talk to some kids and parents, and take some photos. Both of these stories and the photos will appear in this week's paper.

This first week has been a great work experience and I've really gained some insight into the field that I may want to pursue. I feel very proud that they're trusting me with so much responsibility; letting me take the lead on so many stories that they'll actually print in their newspaper. I'm really enjoying my job, among many other great aspects of the program, and I have to thank CE for setting me up with such a great opportunity!

CE San Francisco Week 3!

Phew, just catching up from our whirlwind of activities this past weekend. On Friday we went to see Wicked at the Orpheium Theatre in downtown San Francisco, boy were we in for a surprise about the wicked witch of Oz!


On Saturday we had the opportunity to give back to our community at the Glide Foundation (featured in Will Smith's movie, The Pursuit of Happyness), where we made and packaged over 1,000 lunches! Our giving didn't stop there. We continued in the food business by packaging over 1,000 boxes for the elderly. We really had a system down by the end and I know the boys that had to do all the heavy lifting were glad when we finished! Some of us headed south to warmer weather and to see Rihanna perform live. What a night!


Our adventure didn't stop there because on Sunday during our trip to the Academy of Sciences (can you believe that they have the largest living roof AND the world's largest digital planetarium) was halted when we had to wait 30 minutes to enter due to a fire alarm before we arrived. It was well worth the wait to see the Amazon exhibit and the Albino alligator. After an eventful weekend, it was nice to unwind and go bowling at the Yerba Buena Center.



Monday night we had the chance to test out the sweet spots of San Francisco. Some of us made it to Ghirardelli Square to try Kara's cupcakes while others of us opted for the San Francisco tradition of a delicious Nutella crepe!

Tuesday night we explored the Fillmore area including some chicken and waffles at Gussie's (I guess some of us really miss that home cooking!) as well as check out the shops on the street made famous for the jazz influence.

Can't believe we're already three weeks into the program! Most of us are looking forward to our beach trip to warm Santa Cruz on Sunday, since no one is especially used to this cool (60 degree) weather!
