Yesterday, we spent our day checking out the prison on Alcatraz island! Some of our students were able to go inside one of the confinement cells. Prisoners were sometimes locked in these for 14 days without any lights, our students were only in there for 20 seconds when they wanted to get out! We learned about the attempted escapes on Alcatraz as well as the families that lived there. Everyone was excited about the new information. Ben really enjoyed the quote, "If you break the rules you go to prison, if you break those rules you go to Alcatraz." After the tour, it was time for the students to explore the city! Last night we visited Fort Mason in the Presidio to see the Bats Improv Show, where we saw a competition between two teams of comedians trying to make us last. Gus was even a volunteer during one of the opera scenes! He helped the team get the highest score of the night.
Today we are going to check out the Exploratorium and watch some fireworks at Pier 39. It'll be a great day as long as we can get the muni to cooperate with us!

Exploring Chicago

Saturday June 3rd: The interns took exploring Chicago into their own hands by navigating around the lovely city on a scavenger hunt. We started our adventures at the Adler Planetarium for the fantastic view of the city. Their adventures took them anywhere from "The Bean" to Wrigley Field, but in the end GA Katie's group was victorious.

Afterward we all came back and hopped on a guided trolley tour of everything Chicago has to offer. Interns saw such hot spots such as The Magnificent Mile, Lincoln Park Zoo, and US Cellular Field.

Next up on the agenda is fireworks at Navy Pier tomorrow night.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July everyone!

CE Boston: Recap!! Our first few days at Career Explorations

Friday June 25th: This was the day that everyone arrived to the Colonial Building where we would be living for the next month. We checked in with our group advisors and received our keys to our respective suites. After unpacking and awkwardly meeting our suite-mates, we met as a complete group and made our way over to Quincy Market for ice-cream!

We ate at the dining hall with our new friends on Saturday morning. After that we hung out until the afternoon activity, which was a scavenger hunt around Boston. We became familiar with the T while bonding with the people in our groups and also learned our way around the city. Each group had to plan out their own trips around the city to collect pictures and facts from the places they visited. Groups were awarded points based on the amount and quality of their pictures and facts. (In case you were wondering, Celine’s group won the scavenger hunt and earned a dinner with Seth Flowerman, the creator of Career Explorations, on Wednesday night. WOOT.)

On Sunday afternoon we split into small groups and learned the routes that we would be taking every weekday to our respective internships. Having the Group Advisors walk through each step proved to be extremely helpful the next day when we had to get there by ourselves. That night we also went to the Skywalk where we experienced a 360˚ view of Boston from the 50th floor of the Prudential Center. Some of us went to the Cheesecake Factory afterward during our free time while other went shopping or went back to the dorm to chill in the common room.

Monday morning marked the first day of our internships. One of the many exciting first day experiences included an intern’s opportunity to witness a surgery of a 6 day old infant. Other experiences included cooking in the kitchen of a well known restaurant and working in a courtroom. All of the internships proved to have their highs and lows throughout the week, but so far, everyone seems to be having a great time. We’ll keep you updated throughout the week.

Transportation in San Francisco

My first experience taking the bus in the SF was crazy. First, I got on the wrong bus and went the opposite way before I realized where I was supposed to be was completely different than where Leo had taken me the day before. Also, the people on the bus were quite interesting like "Doug." Doug was the most unique character that we saw and listened to. In the words of Angela, "We have now mastered the muni transportation in SF and it admittedly was harder to navigate than expected but we now have a better grip on how to navigate the city." In addition, we are definitely getting our exercise because SF is one of the most tedious cities to walk around but at least we aren't going to gain weight....
